Emotive exhibition reflects women’s stories of trauma and homelessness
When local sisters Miranda and Claire Harris learned about the South Australian Royal Commission investigating domestic, family, and sexual violence, they felt compelled to make a meaningful contribution.
As experienced artists with deep community connections, the pair run The Art Bus, a mobile studio dedicated to bringing creative programs to those who need support most.
Every week, Miranda and Claire volunteer at Catherine House, a women's shelter, where they share their artistic skills with women who have faced incredibly challenging life circumstances. Through heartfelt conversations and compassionate listening, they discovered profound stories of resilience and survival.
Inspired by the powerful narratives they heard from shelter residents, the sisters decided to create What Women Hold, a thoughtful multimedia exhibition. This deeply personal project showcases artworks created by women at Catherine House, giving voice to their experiences of homelessness, domestic and sexual violence, mental health challenges, and the profound pain of losing connections with their children.
By providing a platform for these women to express their journeys through art, Miranda and Claire are helping to transform private struggles into a collective act of healing and understanding.
